Duquesne University approached WTW Architects to renovate uninspiring and outdated athletic locker rooms and training facilities primarily used by their Duquesne Dukes football, soccer, and lacrosse teams. The primary goal of the project was to create an accessible, functional, and state-of-the-art facility capable of attracting top talent interested in playing NCAA Division I football for one of the nation’s top Catholic universities.
Located next to the 2,200-seat multi-purpose Arthur J. Rooney Field, the locker and training facilities also support various summer sports camps and clinics and help ensure the Rooney Field continues on as a revenue generator for the University.
The 11,000 SF renovation includes new locker rooms for athletes and coaches and an expanded football office suite. Extensive collaboration with coaches, trainers, and athletes was essential for creating an efficient layout and resulted in additional coach’s offices as well as meeting and conference rooms outfitted with the latest digital technology for quickly searching and viewing game tapes.
The team locker room includes a large horizontal sliding whiteboard that permits coaches to draw-up plays while simultaneously watching game tapes during half time. The training facility was expanded to include additional treatment tables and a dedicated whirlpool area, all outfitted with durable, easily maintainable and hygienic finishes.
